The Bill to reduce waiting time for Divorce in Ireland from 4 to 2 years before Justice Committee today

Josepha Madigan T.D.'s Private Members Bill is before the Justice Committee today. If passed, which is looking more likely, it will reduce the waiting time for Divorce from 4 to 2 years. Currently couples who wish to divorce must be living separate and apart for at least 4 of the previous 5 years before they can start the court process to get divorced.

As the court process takes months this further delays the time within which people can get divorced.

The constitution will also have to be amended as it contains the prohibition on divorce unless the parties have been living apart for 4 out of 5 years.

This reform is much welcomed by those seeking divorce and by family lawyers and we wish Josepha well today. She has done great work to move this on.
